While canoeing through the Canadian wilderness, I stumbled upon a heart-wrenching sight—a dog stuck under a log, covered in mud, and unable to move. This poor pup had clearly been in distress for quite some time, crying out for help with no one in sight. I quickly sprang into action, removing the log and gently coaxing the dog to safety.
The dog, a beautiful 14-year-old Great Pyrenees, had been missing for two days. Her back legs weren’t working well, but after some careful maneuvering, I got her onto my canoe and paddled to a nearby house. Fortunately, it turned out to be her home, and the owners, Tom and Janine, were overjoyed to be reunited with their beloved pet, Ivy.
After getting Ivy cleaned up and fed, I stayed the night with the kind family who had welcomed me into their home. It was a reminder of the incredible bonds between humans and animals—and the kindness of strangers. The next morning, Ivy was in better spirits, back to her favorite spot, and I left knowing she was in good hands.
This rescue was one of those moments where I was just in the right place at the right time!
