NORTHSTATE, Calif. — Northern California’s Park Fire, the largest burning fire in the country, remains 34% contained as firefighters continue to deal with hot and dry weather conditions. As of Thursday evening, Aug. 8, Cal Fire says the Park Fire has burned428,194 acres and remained 34% contained.
Fire officials said hotter, drier temperatures and the clear skies led to more activity on the Park Fire this week, especially in areas near Mill Creek. On Thursday, officials said the fire was active overnight with spot fires in several areas.
For Thursday, Cal Fire expects significant fire activity, with ground and air resources aggressively fighting the fire in the Mill Creek area. They say a large smoke column is expected to develop Thursday afternoon, similar to past days.
Fire officials said Monday their damage inspection teams have completed their assessments. Between both Butte and Tehama counties, 636 structures were destroyed and 49 were damaged as of Wednesday, Aug. 7.

The fire ignited in Upper Bidwell Park, northeast of Chico, at around 3 p.m. on July 24. Cal Fire arson investigators and the Butte County District Attorney’s Office said a man was arrested in connection to starting the blaze. The man was allegedly seen pushing a car that was on fire into a gully at Alligator Hole, where the fire started, officials said. The man, identified as Ronnie Stout, 42, of Chico, appeared in court on Monday, July 29, where the judge ultimately ruled that Stout would remain in custody with no option for bail.
