Sea turtles are some of the most intriguing creatures in the ocean. Unlike their land and freshwater relatives, sea turtles have a unique lifestyle. They cannot retract their heads or limbs into their shells and have flipper-like limbs for swimming. Their diet mainly consists of marine plants, soft-bodied animals, and crustaceans.
Sea turtles live in tropical and subtropical waters but can also be found in temperate zones with cooler water temperatures. They inhabit seagrass beds, coral reefs, and rocky areas near the shore. Interestingly, they can sleep on the ocean’s surface or hide in underwater rock crevices.
These magnificent creatures can live up to 80 years in the wild. During their lifetimes, they migrate hundreds or even thousands of kilometers between feeding grounds and nesting sites. Female sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, digging nests and laying between 70 to 190 eggs. The gender of hatchlings is determined by the temperature of the sand where the eggs are incubated.
Sadly, sea turtle populations are declining globally, including in Vietnam, where all five species are listed as endangered. Conservation efforts are crucial. By avoiding the purchase of turtle products and supporting marine conservation activities, we can help protect these ancient mariners for future generations.
